Brief information on Guan Yu Temple  

Located in the northwest of Dangyang County in Hubei Province, the Guan Yu Temple was built during the East Han Dynasty (25-220) and called "Yiyong Ancestral Hall of Emperor Wu’an", which was repaired in Jiajing 15th year and got the name "Guanling".

Guan Yu Temple, 3km northwest from Dangyang County, is the mausoleum of General Gu Yu in ancient China. According to historic records, in East Han Jian’an 24th year (219), Guan Yu and Sun Quan had a battle. Guan Yu was defeated and killed in Linju. Then Sun Quan took his severed head to Cao Cao in Luoyang and buried the body there as the feudal lord. At the very beginning this tomb was just an earth grave, but in South Song Chunxi 10th year (183) some pavilions were built here. During the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the gate of the grave was added. In the Ming Dynasty Chenghua 3rd year (1467) the temple was establishged, then later repaired and remolded.

In the cemetery, there is a memorial arch, red gate, Ma Hall, Pray Hall, the main hall, bedroom palace, Qisheng palace, Spring and Autumn Pavilion, Bozi Cave, the octagonal pavilion, tablet porch and some other buildings. It has a diversified pavilion and a stern palace, encircled with red walls looking very grand. The grave located behind the bedroom palace has a height of 7 meters and perimeter of over 70 meters. It has stone walls and railings with engraved stones in front of the grave and behind pavilions, making it very simple and unsophisticated. Many steel carvings of celebrities during ancient times have been preserved here, among which the prose carved on the stones made by two brothers Yuan Hongdao and Yuan Zhongdao (writers of Ming Dynasty) are especially good. The cemetery faces the Jushui River, looking out in all directions, with towering cypresses inside, very beautiful and peaceful.
