The town used to be named Wangcun until a famous movie entitled Furong Town was filmed there. Most of the people there are of the Tujia ethnic group. Furong’s main attractions are the older, architectural structures and the wooden buildings that provided most of the film’s sets. the village has little character and most of the buildings are so dilapidated that it seems the whole town could well slide into the river and only remains propped up by the tourist trade. It was built in memory of Wang Changling, a famous poet from the Tang Dynasty. It is an important cultural relics reserve of Hunan Province. There is also a large stone archway, over 100 years old, built to commemorate the virtue of a young woman.
